Youth Theatre Ireland in Association with Activate Youth Theatre presents the World Premiere of a new play by Jody O’Neill.
‘Fail, an Epic or An Epic Fail’ will be staged online on 28 May at 7pm via Zoom. Taking inspiration from the words of one of the world leading activists for Climate Action, Greta Thunberg, the play follows a group of young people attempting to stage a carbon neutral production. Everything, including the set and lights are entirely carbon neutral, but are they really? Can they solve the issues of divestment, carbon emissions, and plastic consumption?
‘Youth Theatre Ireland are delighted to support Activate Youth Theatre with the world premiere of ‘Fail, an Epic or An Epic Fail’ by Jody O’Neill, which was funded through the Youth Climate Justice Fund in 2020. Youth Theatre allows young people to creatively explore their world and the issues that affect them. Climate Justice is a key global issue that will disproportionately affect young people and this play allows young people to engage with a topic that will be very important to their future and the future of our planet.’ Eoghan Doyle, Youth Theatre Ireland.
'It's been a huge pleasure to work with Activate members over the past few months on the development of this play. Of course, we had hoped to be able to work together in person, but that hasn't been possible. However, I've been in absolute awe of the skill with which Julie O’Leary and Fionn Woodhouse have made the online workshop space come alive, and of the commitment and passion that the participating young people have brought to the project.' Jody O’Neill, Playwright.
‘I was so delighted for Activate to be involved in this brilliant project! Jody is a previous member of Activate; it's so inspiring for the current members to see a YT alum working as a professional playwright and theatre maker while still connecting to the Youth Theatre sector. Activate were involved in the devising workshops and are now performing a staged reading of the finished piece, so they have had an excellent experience of the whole process. Climate Justice is an important topic, one that our YT members felt particularly passionate about. This project gives them an opportunity for learning, but also gives them a platform to engage with others, ignite important conversations and even inspire long lasting changes in our actions!’ Julie O'Leary, Director, Activate Youth Theatre
This play reading is recommended for ages 13 and over, as it contains some strong language and some themes of a sensitive nature. Following its world premiere, the play will be made available for performance to affiliated Youth Theatres from Youth Theatre Ireland’s Playshare resource. For more information visit YouthTheatre.ie
