Snapped Youth Theatre, based in Thurles, Co. Tipperary, is a new creative space for young people with Down Syndrome and the newest member of Youth Theatre Ireland.
Sister Youth Theatre
Snapped serves as a sister youth theatre to the long established Fracture YT at the Source Arts Centre.
Snapped offers playful, inclusive, and flexible space that prioritises creativity, collaboration, and self- expression.
It is open to all secondary- school-aged young people, regardless of background, ability, or experience. Alongside Fracture they perform a welcoming community where every young person can find their place, build confidence, and share their stories through theatre.
Partnership
Operating in partnership with Down Syndrome Tipperary and the Source Arts Centre, it is facilitated by experienced theatre practitioners Emily Matthews and Danielle Martin, whose commitment to inclusive arts practice ensures that each session is engaging, empowering, and fun.
Currently, Snapped YT has 10 active members. This small group size fosters a close-knit, supportive environment where participants can build confidence, develop artistic skills, and form lasting friendships. The youth theatre’s mission is rooted in inclusion, creativity, and community—values that shine through in every workshop and performance.
Speaking of the partnership, Linda Gillick from Down Syndrome Tipperary said:
"Being part of Snapped Youth Theatre is an incredible experience for all of us in Down Syndrome Tipperary. It gives our members a chance to shine, connect, and celebrate their talents in such a joyful way. Watching everyone take part with so much confidence and pride is truly special - and my daughter Maya absolutely loves every moment of it! We’re so proud to have been part of something that celebrates inclusion, creativity, and friendship".
Creative Ireland Support
In 2024, Snapped YT received a Creative Ireland Seed Grant through Youth Theatre Ireland, which has been instrumental in funding facilitator fees and supporting the group’s development.
Additional backing from the Source Arts Centre and Down Syndrome Tipperary highlights the strong local commitment to the arts and to amplifying lesser-heard voices.
Snapped Youth Theatre is more than just a youth theatre—it’s a beacon of possibility. Through collaboration, creativity, and care, it offers young people with Down Syndrome a platform to thrive artistically and socially.
Having affiliated in early June, four members of Snapped took part in the inaugural Empower Youth Theatre Encounter at Kilkenny College this year.Youth Theatre Ireland is proud to support this inspiring initiative and looks forward to seeing Snapped YT grow in the years ahead and become regular participants in the Youth Theatre Ireland programme.
"Snapped Youth Theatre grew from a simple idea, that everyone deserves the chance to experience the joy of theatre. We’re building an inclusive creative space where young people can explore, connect, and express themselves freely. It’s been incredible to watch confidence and creativity flourish in every participant." Emily Matthews, Artistic Director
