The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone T.D, announced the Children First legislation will be commenced in its entirety on 11th December 2017. It is increasingly essential that youth theatres and youth drama practitioners are fully aware of the obligations they have for safeguarding the wellbeing of the young people in their groups. Providing training for staff and volunteers is a key obligation for organisations under the legislation. Visit the Tusla website for more information on the requirements for organisations.
The Child Protection Awareness Programme is the recognised awareness programme for the Youth Work Sector and participation helps ensure groups meet their responsibilities in relation to Children First and the National Quality Standards for Youth Groups. The training will be facilitated by Louise Holian, Youth Theatre Ireland's Child Protection and Welfare Officer and Katie Martin, General Manager and child protection trainer.
The focus will be on the key elements of Child Protection adapted to the specific context of youth theatre including:
definitions of child abuse,
signs and symptoms of abuse,
recruitment & selection of staff/volunteers
dealing with disclosures,
codes of behaviour.
There will also be opportunities to discuss practical solutions to some of the challenging situations that youth theatre leaders may come across in their work.
Participants, who complete the training in full will receive a certificate of attendance.
Who is the Training for?
